how to help your kids write a letter to grandma (that she'll keep forever)

there's something about a letter to grandma from a grandchild that a video call can't touch. she can hold it, put it on the fridge, read it again on a quiet tuesday. and for kids, writing to grandparents is the sweetest way to practice handwriting, spelling and big feelings all at once.

the catch? "write to grandma" is a big ask for a little person. here's how to make it easy, by age, plus prompts to get the pencil moving.

why letters to grandparents matter

  • grandparents treasure handwritten mail far more than texts (ask any grandma with a shoebox).
  • kids learn that writing is for connection, not just homework.
  • it builds a back-and-forth habit: when grandma writes back, mail day becomes the best day.

letter ideas by age

ages 3 to 5 (the scribblers)

  • draw a picture of your favorite thing you did this week
  • trace your hand and write "a hug for you"
  • you write the words, they add stickers and a giant signature
  • "i love you because ___" (they say it, you write it down)

ages 6 to 8 (the new writers)

  • "my favorite food this week was ___"
  • "at school we learned ___"
  • "when i come visit, i want to ___"
  • draw grandma and grandpa as superheroes
  • ask one question: "what was your favorite toy?"

ages 9 to 12 (the storytellers)

  • tell grandma about a friend, a book or a game you love
  • ask what school was like when she was your age
  • share a joke and make her guess the punchline in her reply
  • write "three things you don't know about me yet"

5 tips to make it stick

  1. 1keep it short. five sentences and a drawing is a wonderful letter.
  2. 2make it a ritual. first sunday of the month, tea and cocoa, letters out.
  3. 3include a reply page. grandparents write back faster when the paper and a stamped envelope are already there.
  4. 4let kids decorate the envelope. it's half the fun.
  5. 5lunchbox notes go both ways. tuck a note in their lunchbox, and they'll want to write their own.
